Abstract Wavelets comprise the family of translations and dilations of a single function called the wavelet. The name is due to the fact that every wavelet has to have at least some oscillations, and that it is localized. The wavelet transform is the set of scalar products of all dilated and translated wavelets with an arbitrary analysed function. This linear map is a partial isometry and its range is characterized by a reproducing kernel.
