Abstract Although the universal Turing machine’s contribution to technology has been immeasurable, its contribution to the formalization and understanding of the most fundamental philosophical ideas may ultimately be regarded as the more profound and significant. According to Church’s thesis, the universal Turing machine (UTM) represents the limit of computational power and thus can serve as a formal foundation for theories of computability and complexity.
