Abstract This chapter outlines the basic components of the GLIM language and introduces the general syntax and mode of use of the package. GLIM statements are composed of characters from the GLIM character set, which is listed in the Reference Guide [13.1]. Essentially, this consists of upper- and lower-case letters, digits, and a range of operators and brackets which will be introduced in the relevant chapters of the User Guide. Lower-case letters are treated as equivalent to the corresponding upper-case letters in statements when they are interpreted by the GLIM program, except in strings when the case is retained. The character ‘@’ is used in fault messages to indicate an invalid input character.
