Secure and Efficient Mobility Management in 5G Wireless Networks

Dongfeng Fang, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu · 2023

This chapter introduces a novel mobility management scheme for 5G wireless networks based on software-defined networking architecture. Numerous research activities have been conducted to enhance handover performance, primarily by minimizing the frequency of handovers. The chapter examines various handover scenarios within the proposed 5G HetNet system model and presents the corresponding handover procedures based on these scenarios. It presents 5G authentication and key agreement protocols for pre-authentication, full authentication, and fast authentication to provide the confidentiality service for authentication and to pre-authenticate the user equipment and the base station to the authentication server function, without utilizing public key infrastructure. The chapter provides a security analysis of the new authentication protocols with respect to authentication, confidentiality, and privacy properties. It also presents an evaluation of the performance of the proposed authentication protocols in terms of communication overhead and computation overhead.
