Security Mechanisms in 5G Wireless Systems
Dongfeng Fang, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu · 2023
This chapter discusses the security mechanisms in 5G wireless systems, focusing on providing different security services such as authentication, availability, data confidentiality, key management, and privacy. These mechanisms can be categorized into two main approaches: cryptographic with new networking protocols and physical layer security (PLS). Before delving into the 5G security solutions, the basics of these two categories are introduced. The objective of PLS is to leverage the physical properties of communication channels to establish secure communication. The security requirements of 5G wireless networks are evaluated with respect to each security service, taking into account the specific needs and challenges of the new network environment. To meet the performance demands of 5G wireless network services, security and privacy mechanisms must be efficient, flexible, and adaptable.
