A Streamline Based Approach to the Adaptation of Unstructured Grids for Viscous Flow Simulation

M. J. Marchant, Nigel P. Weatherill · 1996

Abstract The early development of techniques for viscous flow simulations has largely been constructed for use on structured grids([l], [2], [3]). However, more recently, unstructured grid generation techniques, such as the advancing front technique ([4], [5]) and the Delaunay triangulation approach ([6], [7],[8]), have shown the flexibility and efficiency for discretizing the domain around complex configurations. Unfortunately, these techniques do not, in general, generate triangles and tetrahedra with high aspect ratios which retain the smoothness and regularity required for viscous flow simulation. The use of unit aspect ratio elements is too computationally expensive for viscous dominated flows where length scales within boundary layers are very small.
