Abstract In this chapter, we review some current research on computer viruses in companies, and attempt to synthesire these findings with a few of the major trends in computing in order to steal a glimpse into the future of computer viruses from a business perspective. Because of the general lack of data in this area, we focus much of our discussion on just three countries— the UK, the USA, and South Africa. The incidence of virus attacks on businesses Just how widespread are virus attacks on business computers? A few of the problems associated with collecting reliable information on the incidence of computer virus attacks were mentioned in Chapter 2, but some indication of the prevalence and severity of the problem is provided by the studies discussed below.
