Your Character’s Universe: Analyzing the Dramatic Structure of Music-Theater Pieces

Abstract The overwhelming majority of music-theater pieces are built from closely similar blueprints. They combine four kinds of building blocks—the first three of which they share with spoken theater pieces—to create variations of a stock dramatic structure. This common origin allows you to construct believable characters by using only a few powerful tools that are applicable to songs, art songs, lieder, musicals, and operas alike.
