Electric and magnetic work processes

Gerald Carrington · 1994

Abstract Several different types of work process may be identified when matter is subject to electric and magnetic fields. Consequently there are a number of expressions for the work performed. Each is useful in a particular physical situation. This chapter provides an introduction to these work processes and to the thermodynamic functions associated with them. While we shall refer to this material in subsequent chapters it may be passed over on a first reading without loss of continuity.
