Identification of Basic Features

Gary S. Karpinski · 2000

Abstract This chapter examines basic features of music that listeners can learn to identify at the earliest stages of study. The essential difference between the listening skills discussed in this chapter and those discussed in the next is that those in this chapter are not absolutely necessary for immediate progress whereas those in the next chapter lay an essential groundwork for the progressive curriculum discussed from there on. One might therefore consider the skills in this chapter to be “optional,” and—in some senses—they are. However, as part of any well-rounded musician’s training, the ability to articulately discriminate among various differences in the following features is fundamental. These topics may be addressed in advance of the materials in the subsequent chapters or may be covered concurrently with them.
