X’-Theory

Abstract The structure of a phrase X’-theory is a theory of phrase structure. That is, it is a theory of what constitutes a possible phrase in natural language. Phrase structure concerns the hierarchical and left-to-right relationships between syntactic categories. For example, in English one type of verb phrase (VP) consists of a verb that precedes its NP complement. Early ap¬proaches to phrase structure in generative grammar stipulated both types of relationship for every category of every language.
