Some Basic Concepts of Hpsg

Andreas Kathol · 2000

Abstract This chapter provides a brief overview of some of the major concepts of HPSG that form the basis of the exposition in the later chapters. Besides introducing notational conventions that are commonly used in descriptive practice, it illustrates some of the design properties of HPSG grammars, such as the reliance on valence features of verious kinds. Of special importance for the chapters that follow is the relationship between constituent structure and linear order laid out in the ‘standard’ version described in Pollard & Sag (1987, 1994).
