Automation and Work in Britain

Peter J. Senker · 1992

Abstract This chapter discusses the implications of automation for work organization and skills in Britain’s engineering industries. These industries are engaged in the manufacture of metal goods and mechanical engineering products such as machine tools; electronics, including components; consumer goods; defence products and systems; industrial capital equipment and office equipment; instrument engineering; motor vehicles; and aerospace equipment. As in all advanced industrial countries, these industries play important economic roles as producers and employers. Their performance is heavily dependent on their success in implementing automation, and on the availability of an adequate supply of appropriate skills among the labour force.
