Hitachi: Organizing For Process And Quall1y Control
Michael A. Cusumano · 1991
Abstract Among all the companies in the world, Hitachi in 1969 first established a software facility labeled and managed as a factory, calling the facility the Software Works or, more literally, the Software Factory.1 SDC ‘s early models in project management during the 1960s helped inspire some of the practices Hitachi adopted. Hitachi ‘s factory, however, came not as the result of a deliberate effort in process R&D. Nor did Hitachi man agers have as clear an idea as their counterparts in SDC what a factory system might look like for software production.
