Abstract Obscene and blasphemous speech (together with racist speech, discussed in depth in chapter 7) are regulated, at least in part, because of their ability to offend and shock some or all of the population. Indeed, the protection of individuals from offence as a result of attacks on their religion is really the only justification for prohibiting blasphemous speech.
