Application of Artificial Intelligence in Drug Design and Development

Development of intelligence in a non-living machine is called artificial intelligence (AI). Artificial intelligence is a broad term that includes the development of intelligent devices like robots, smart devices, automatic driverless vehicles, and self-programmed computing devices, which are having impacts on different aspects of human life. Although there is a major risk of depletion in human employment because of AI's ever-increasing application in various fields, AI is also responsible for greater environmental sustainability. We can consider the example of pharmaceuticals. The traditional system of drug development was considered ‘hit and miss’ with a very low success rate before the application of AI. The low rate of success in the practice of developing newer drug molecules is claimed to be a major cause of environmental pollution from the chemical substances used to practise and optimise the synthesis of new chemical moieties. Also, a large number of experimental animals are sacrificed to test these drug candidates, causing disturbance in the natural food chain. The current modernisation through the greater applicability of AI-based prediction of drugability should increase the success rate in a drastic manner, leading to reduced environmental pollution.
