Security on the Edge: The Role of Autonomy in Securing DTNs

Edward J. Birrane, Sarah Heiner · 2023

The Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN) architecture allows for secure messaging without requiring a contemporaneous end-to-end path. The implementation of such a system must rely upon per-node autonomy in the absence of timely end-to-end messaging. This autonomy can be built from a combination of in-band security information present in message traffic combined with a local autonomy engine such as one proposed for DTN network management. This paper describes how a DTN network management system can be used to implement a self-managing security service (SMSS) providing an autonomous per-node security policy. This paper further discusses how each individual SMSS in a network could be built to ensure end-to-end interoperability. Finally, some of the open challenges in this area are identified as potential future work towards an operational system.
