The paper describes time sensitive networking, a set of standards designed to improve the real-time properties of current Ethernet networks. This contributes to the implementation of a smart grid, or, in a broader sense, to implementation of Industry 4.0. A set of standards defining this paradigm is described, as well as advantages over the standard Ethernet. In addition, OPC UA architecture is described, which represents an application layer open standard, which enables communication between industrial devices and HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) from different suppliers. Finally, considerations regarding secuity issues in such an environment are provided.
