Integration of the Cloud with Fog Computing to Secure Data Transmission between IoT and Cloud

Shatakshi Kokate, Urmila N. Shrawankar · 2023

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are currently being used extensively across several industries to collect data. Data traffic generated by the use and growth of IoT devices is huge. When data must be transferred to the cloud for storage, handling such a large amount of traffic becomes a significant problem. This in turn raises bandwidth and latency risks as well as risks linked to data security and confidentiality. The IoT network with heavy traffic can be readily attacked by hostile agents who threaten the security of information received from the IoT. This problem can be solved by using fog computing, which becomes more and more crucial to control the data flow. The fog computing is a branch of cloud computing. Processing now happens locally on a virtual platform as a result of the development of fog computing rather than on a centralized cloud server. Fog computing improves latency, transfer speed, veracity, safety, and protection by extending cloud services. Cloud computing and fog computing work better together since fog computing by itself is ineffective. The constraints of the current system using IoT and cloud, the three-tier architecture, and benefits and challenges in fog computing are all points covered in this chapter.
