Overview on the Role of Cybersecurity in a Smart Society

Scientific research and industrial development determine the diffusion and the progressive use of Emerging and Disruptive Technologies (EDT), which include networks and protocols latest generation communication (5G/6G), blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, High Performance Computing (HPC), Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, advanced cryptographic tools and other breakthrough innovations. However, the widespread use of digital services also increases the risk of cyber-attacks at all levels in many business sectors. What are the solutions to ensure the security and privacy of citizens living in smart societies? How can the behavior of citizens affect the security of their data? Digitization and protection of personal data must progress hand-in-hand, even if in truth the sudden transformation of our lifestyles, with the rapid spread of new technologies, has not been accompanied by an equally rapid development of tools to improve the level of cybersecurity in large and small urban centers. The strong extension of the surface exposed to hacker attacks multiplies the dangers both for citizens and for institutions, companies, and the public administration. This chapter intends to describe the strategies on cybersecurity from an Italian and global point of view.
