Quantum Technologies for the Metaverse: Opportunities and Challenges

The application of quantum technologies in the Metaverse stems from the great benefits they can bring about to overcome the pressing challenges facing the Metaverse. This chapter aims to investigate the potential opportunities for applying quantum technologies to serve the immersive Metaverse and overcome its challenges. It begins by giving a brief background review about quantum information, which is necessary to understand the operation of the different quantum technologies and how they can be deployed to enhance the Metaverse. Then, three main areas of quantum technologies are analyzed as potential candidates to serve the Metaverse, namely quantum computing and quantum optimization, quantum machine learning, and quantum communications. For each technology, its basics are explained, the Metaverse challenges it addresses are identified, and a vision of the role it will play in the different applications of the Metaverse is given.
