The Simple and Scientifically Sound Shift

Katie Egan Cunningham, Jan Miller Burkins, Kari Yates · 2023

Given the importance of fluency development for reading comprehension, it is essential that we intentionally support students through carefully planned fluency instruction, including modeling, practice, and feedback. The good news is that a few simple but flexible instructional routines can help students develop greater oral reading fluency and, consequently, deeper comprehension. The authors zoom in on establishing a weekly routine, scaffolding repeated reading, scooping phrases, performance reading, and self-assessing fluency. To help facilitate self-awareness around all three components of fluency, you can use simple tools for students to assess their fluency efforts and document their improvement across repeated readings. Self-assessment also taps into children&s;s natural drive to improve over their last attempt, giving repeated oral reading an additional purpose.
