Writers need to understand the various text structures available within a genre. Writers also must learn to think of themselves as readers, understanding how to get their meaning across by practicing comprehension strategies. As students read and/or listen to informational texts, it’s important for them not only to be aware of the comprehension strategies they’re using but also to learn how to make note of their new understanding without plagiarizing. Without much hesitation at all, the children start drawing their legs and jotting down their topics. This is a strategy in which kids are doing a lot of writerly work without knowing they’re doing it. When students turn and talk with a partner or popcorn share, it’s a quick way for them not only to share their thinking but also to hear other ideas. These ideas may spark other ideas for their own writing.
