I n Chapter 1 , I pointed out that argument is everywhere and mentioned that you probably have many opportunities for teaching thinking skills. Using the information in Chapters 3 through 7, you can now be more purposeful with those activities. But what if you are looking for new ideas? As I was surveying teachers before writing this book, several sent me ideas that they have used successfully in class. Let me share some with you. Most of these approaches would be appropriate for multiple grade levels and subjects and could be turned into either speaking or writing assignments. At the end of each activity, I mention a connection with the book that I think is relevant, but it is merely a suggestion. Play with the activities. Tweak them. Do what you do to tailor instruction for your classes.
