Focused Cloze

Janet Allen · 2023

Focused Cloze is a modification of the cloze procedure ( Taylor 1953 ). The original cloze was designed as an assessment of text-to-reader readability match. In the cloze procedure a portion of text (two-hundred-fifty-plus words) is chosen. The beginning and ending of the excerpt remain intact, and then every nth word (fifth, seventh, tenth, etc.) is omitted. Words are omitted in a consistent pattern. Students use only the context to predict the omitted word. Words are considered correct if the word replacing the omitted word is an exact match. Scores above 60 percent correct indicate the text is at a student&s;s independent level; scores between 40 to 60 percent correct indicate text is at an instructional level; scores below 40 percent correct indicate reading is at a frustration level.
