Introduction to Informational Writing

Lynne R. Dorfman, Diane Dougherty · 2023

Good informational writing gives facts and details about a specific topic either by summarizing research from a variety of sources or by drawing conclusions based on facts and information at hand. Explanations need to be complete and thorough without being redundant. This requirement is a daunting task for young writers as, indeed, it can be for experienced writers as well. The writer must provide facts, statistics, descriptive details, definition, and analysis. Informational writing is a complicated skill. Most young writers have some background in storytelling. Teachers of writing need to help students organize their information in such a way that everything necessary is included. Providing graphic organizers and teaching transitional words and phrases are important ways to achieve this end.
