Interoperable Healthcare with Blockchain: A Data Transfer Model

Niranjan Sahi, Anda Liang, Sean Mchale, Wyn Van Devanter, Peng Zhang · 2023

Patients in the US today entrust medical providers to create and maintain accurate records of their sensitive medical information and personal data. When a patient changes providers due to relocation or other reasons, they are reliant on their most recent provider to transfer this information to the next provider in a secure manner in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) [1]. This can place a significant burden on the patient, as they are often responsible for gathering and contacting previous providers to request the transfer of their medical history. The data transfer process can be time-consuming and, if not performed correctly, can lead to errors, delays in receiving care, or even security breaches of sensitive personal and medical information.
