In this chapter, an innovative approach to the development of a CALT toolkit is put forward, which has the following characteristics: (i) issues coming from the direct conversion of CAT principles and tools into CALT principles and tools are eliminated; (ii) the translator&s;s creativity is stimulated rather than inhibited; (iii) instead of enforcing a ‘one size, fits all’ translation workflow through a CALT tool, translators are afforded the flexibility to develop their own workflow; (iv) non-linear workflows are supported where translation outcomes can freely flow through different translation activities and external tools; (v) the translator is augmented with technology, rather than their behavioural patterns being merely supported, or the technology used to replace them; (vi) comparative insights into the original text, previous translations and the translator&s;s own translation are provided in an empowering and flexible manner; and (vii) the translator&s;s work is enriched by drawing on findings from translation theory and related fields. To achieve this, building a CALT tool is approached from a perspective where the understanding of the process and technology is rethought, while both data models and system workflows are democratised and informed with multi-disciplinary findings. Although this chapter is based on the CALT toolkit currently under development by the authors and is illustrated by examples from its existing and projected components, the main contribution of the chapter is to propose a paradigm shift in CALT tool design.
