Architectural Patterns for NFRs in Cloud Microservices

Archana Kumari, K Babu Rao, S Mohan Kumar · 2023

Microservices Architectures (MSAs) have emerged as a prominent architectural pattern for building highly available, scalable, and performant cloud applications. While functional requirements vary across applications, non-functional requirements (related to operational quality) are frequently shared across businesses and domains. In this paper, we review the latest and most relevant work on the prevalent NFRs (nonfunctional requirements) pertaining to cloud MSAs, as these are instrumental to any modern cloud application. When it comes to the implementation of cloud MSAs, there are multiple architectural patterns to choose from. We conduct research on the patterns while keeping the context of the NFRs in mind in order to select the appropriate pattern to handle the NFRs for the application. The objective of this work is to document the NFRs, the challenges posed by them to the cloud native system design, and how the various architectural patterns in the cloud can work to meet these non-functional requirements (NFRs) of an application and aid the application development process in a cloud environment.
