The Optimization of TZSearch for VVC Motion Estimation

Based on the previous generation standard H.265/HEVC, H.266/VVC adopted many new technologies to achieve higher compression performance. At the same time, it also brought a significant increase in encoding complexity. To reduce the computational time of the motion estimation (ME) module, this paper proposes a fast ME algorithm that improves the basic Test Zone Search (TZSearch) ME algorithm for the initial search point and search patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the encoding time by 0.23% on average, while the BD-Rate is only increased by 0.12% on Fraunhofer Versatile Video Encoder (VVenC), the open efficient encoder of H.266/VVC.
