9 Drug repurposing strategy in the identification of drugs for cardiovascular disorders

Cardiovascular disorders are considered a major health concern and the leading cause of death worldwide. New drug approvals for cardiovascular disorders have witnessed a sharp decline over the last few decades. The rationale development of new cardiovascular drugs, with improved therapeutic efficacy and lesser side effects, has been in progress over the years. Of note, the Drug repurposing strategy has proven to be the most effective and safe means of identification of new drugs. The drug repurposing strategy for cardiovascular disease has been of great value due to the reduction in time investment, lesser chances of failure, and the greater probability of getting an approved drug. A few reviews on the general topic of drug repurposing have been published. However, no comprehensive book chapter based on the drug repurposing strategy for cardiovascular disorders is reviewed. In the present book chapter, we have attempted to highlight the use of a drug repurposing strategy for the identification of new cardiovascular drugs.
