1 Contemporary trends in drug repurposing: Identifying new targets for existing drugs

Drug repositioning or drug repurposing has evolved as a successful, well-liked alternative strategy in contemporary drug discovery to find older medications for new targets economically and dynamically. The world’s most difficult healthcare issue of the century, the Covid-19 pandemic, gives this idea a tremendous boost. In this method, researchers look for new applications and low-risk clinical uses of medications that have already been pharmacologically proven and licensed. With the rapid advancement of technology, numerous new drug-target diseases are discovered, and as a result, a wealth of information is now available in various databases, including Drug Bank, OMIM, ChemBank, KEGG, Pubmed and Genecard. The idea of medication repurposing along with its effects on companies, academia and society has been discussed in this chapter. Moreover, the chapter covers the methods and strategies used in drug repositioning for identifying drugs for different diseases and disorders. The current chapter also takes into account the most recent market research and updates on the costs of drug repurposing- based drug discovery program, its comparability to conventional drug discovery methodologies, difficulties associated with drug repurposing and future views.
