A Study on Impedance Calculation Methods for Power Cables In Railway Systems

Sukjin HONG, J.B. Lee · The Transactions of The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers · 2023

Railway electrification is on track to increase train speed and high density operation. Railway lines are constructed underground to get line alignment not to provoke environment problems nowadays. There are restrictions to construct aerial power lines in urban area such as railway systems. Power transmission lines are too constructed in underground to meet environment constraints and power demand increase. Underground power transmission lines have to use power cables. The power cables are not simple transmission due to its structure. Power cables are composed of core and sheath of which material is metal. The core and sheath is interacted through magnetic field producing by current flowing in core. The magnetic coupling changes the cable impedance. It is important to calculate impedance of power cables to implement protection system, reactor and so on to operate stable power delivering. This paper tried to calculate cable impedance using modified Bessel functions.
