Five-Step Cycle for Collaboration
Beth Frates, Tracie McCargo · 2023
Behavior change and coaching are multifaceted. This chapter combines information from Chapters 1 to 11 to explain the rationale behind the five-step cycle of collaboration used to empower patients to change. Clinicians can use this five-step cycle during each clinic visit whether it is 10 or 60 minutes. They may only have time to follow through with two or three steps, but even the power of the first step, expressing empathy, can help the clinician create a compassionate connection that invites the patient to consider steps on their behavior change journey. While reading this chapter, it is important to keep the previous chapters in mind, as they represent important foundational keys to behavior change. This chapter provides a real-time roadmap for the healthcare professional when working with a patient on behavior change. These are action steps for counseling and coaching patients to support them on their behavior change journeys.
