Moving for machines

When performers use sensors in electronic music performances, they must develop a new and different virtuosity in their movements. This virtuosity is often imperceptible to the audience, but it is crucial to communicate with the software or hardware that is synthesising the sounds. The movements of the performer’s body are captured by sensors and analysed by computer software, using technologies such as machine learning to interpret or predict movements of the performer. The computer needs specific forms of precise timing and predefined movements, often resulting in contradictions between musical and technical needs. Performers have to develop additional contemporary virtuosic qualities for these timings and movements when performing with sensors. This article explores what exactly this new virtuosity is and how performers achieve this virtuosity.
