Critical infrastructure refers to the physical and virtual systems that are vital to the functioning of a society. With the increasing reliance on technology, critical infrastructure is becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, which can have devastating consequences on national security, public safety, and economic stability. Cyber resilience frameworks are a set of guidelines and best practices designed to help organisations prepare for, detect, respond to, and recover from cyberattacks. These frameworks are essential for critical infrastructure organisations, which are high-value targets for cyberattacks. They provide a structured approach for organisations to identify and manage cyber risks and ensure continuity of operations in the event of a cyberattack. This chapter will provide an overview of critical infrastructure and cyber resilience frameworks. It will discuss the importance of critical infrastructure protection, the types of critical infrastructure, and the potential consequences of a cyberattack on critical infrastructure. This chapter will also examine different cyber resilience frameworks, later referencing the challenges faced by organisations in implementing cyber resilience frameworks, such as the lack of resources and expertise, the difficulty in measuring the effectiveness of the framework, and the need to balance security with operational efficiency. Overall, this chapter aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of critical infrastructure and cyber resilience frameworks and their importance in protecting critical infrastructure from cyber threats.
