Mana - Bringing Accessible HPC to Hawai’i
Ron Merrill, David Schanzenbach, Sean B. Cleveland, Gwen A. Jacobs · Practice and Experience in Advanced Research Computing · 2023
One of the core functions of most academic cyberinfrastructure teams is to provide, maintain and secure central research computer resources. In this work, the Information Technology Services (ITS) Cyberinfrastructure (ITS-CI) team at the University of Hawai’i (UH) describes the evolution of Mana, a high performance computing cluster (HPC) from an initial vendor proprietary system to one using completely open source software. We describe the experience and lessons learned in the management of a centralized university computing cluster over the course of the past 8 years.
