Bilingual Language Processing and Interference Control from an Integrated Perspective

Klára Marton, Valerie L. Shafer · 2023

Research has established that knowledge and use of more than one language fundamentally changes how a speaker and/or listener processes language. This chapter discusses models of bilingual processing that address interference effects in bilingual language processing and emphasizes the importance that both attention-dependent and attention-independent systems play in skilled bilingual language processing. In addition, the chapter highlights that as a bilingual person becomes more experienced, the interplay between the brain mechanisms underlying attention-dependent and attention-independent processes will shift to support efficient cognitive control of the bilingual speaker&s;s two (or more) languages. Recognizing that bilingual language processing engages cognitive control, sensorimotor, and procedural-brain mechanisms will allow us to reach a deeper understanding of bilingual language performance.
