Hidden complexity at textual level and its cognitive implications for simplification
Léo Annebi, Julia Degenhardt · Easy - plain - accessible · 2023
A wide range of text types 1 such as recipes, manuals or some parts of pharmaceutical package inserts can be classified as instructional texts; hence readers are confronted with them in their everyday lives. These texts fall within the scope of Easy Language translation, since this language variety claims to be applicable to any domain of communication (Bock 2014: 31). Easy Language aims at producing accessible texts by enhancing their perceptibility and comprehensibility. Therefore, the complexity of the source text is reduced at different textual levels, including the semantic level (Hansen-Schirra/Maaß 2020: 18).
