The Computer and its Consequences in Terms of Work
Jacques Balthazart · 2023
In the 1970s, scientific research was published in all major European languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and so on. Scientific conferences were also multilingual with or without simultaneous translation, which singularly complicated the exchanges. The Biological Abstracts have been digitized and can be consulted online with an automatic keyword search. Many other databases have appeared and can be easily consulted by all researchers. Specific programs for encoding and sorting bibliographic references then rapidly became widespread. Numerous programs for personal computers have been developed and are easily accessible to perform sophisticated statistical analyses of the data. Scientific drawing programs are also available to prepare all types of graphs usually found in a publication, such as histograms, curves, Venn diagrams and pie charts to name a few.
