Gateway DCU for Backbone Network Communication Architecture in a Vehicle or in LAN Network

Arya G. Nair, P N Seema, Manjula G. Nair · 2023

Communication systems in vehicles play a critical role in enabling efficient data transfer and network connectivity. In automotive communication, this paper explores the protocols, network architectures, and the emergence of a backbone network architecture. Furthermore, with the growing automation in various systems, such as smart grids and automobiles, controllers have become pivotal components. These necessitate the consideration of factors such as data transfer speed, security, cost-effectiveness, and overall effectiveness in the design of automated systems. The focus is on proposing a backbone topology that can be applied in LAN networks and automotive settings. While Controller Area Network (CAN) is a prominent communication protocol in vehicles, the paper also examines the promising future of automotive Ethernet. By integrating Ethernet connectivity into existing networks, improvements in security, speed, and cost-effectiveness can be achieved. These advancements extend beyond vehicle networks and have potential applications in other automated systems, including home automation. Index Terms—Intra- Vehicular Communication, CAN, Ethernet, Backbone Network, Communication architecture, Controller
