Planned languages

Sabine Fiedler · 2023

This chapter studies language systems that were consciously created to facilitate international communication. It sheds light on the history of planned language systems, provides an overview of various types of classification, and presents those projects that saw some degree of real-life application: Volapük, Latino sine flexione, Ido, Occidental, Basic English, and Interlingua. Its focus, however, is on Esperanto, an autonomous a posteriori system with a diverse and productive speech community, and the way in which language planning functions in the planned language today.
