Novel Spatial Interaction Method for Viewing Ancient Chinese Scroll Paintings

Nan-Ching Tai, Ming-Shu Tsai, Kuang-Ting Huang · 2023

The pictorial space described in Chinese scroll paintings is based on parallel projection and thus can be extended horizontally. As a result, when displayed in secure boxes in museums or galleries, one cannot view with the intended collaboration of the hand and the eye, and the perceptual experience is lacking. This study presents an interactive device that restores the authentic viewing experience with a tangible handscroll and interactive digital content, allowing viewers to enter the façade and visually experience the space in perspective.
