CB-RPL: Coordinator-Based RPL for Energy Efficient Routing Mechanism
Surajeet Ghosh, Anirban Chand · 2022
This paper presents a coordinator-based routing mechanism for the Internet of Things (IoT) for the efficient energy utilization of IoT sensors. In state-of-the-art approaches, while joining a sensor node, numerous control messages are transmitted over the network, creating massive traffic in the network, thereby degrading the performance. The proposed scheme reduces the network traffic and energy consumption by lowering control message transmission between the nodes and the processing overhead in the sensor nodes. The coordinator nodes are responsible for handling control messages to maintain a DODAG and data messages for upward transmission. Numerical results show the improvement of the proposed scheme over the existing approaches in terms of packet delivery ratio ($\approx$4%-11% enhancement), latency ($\approx$ 15%-73% lesser), energy consumption ($\approx$50% lower), and throughput (improvement $\approx3\times$ for small network and $\approx1.7\times$ for large network).
