The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity has become increasingly common, but a key challenge is the lack of transparency and interpretability of AI models. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) can address this issue by providing a means of enhancing the transparency and interpretability of AI models, enabling cybersecurity professionals to better understand the decisions made by these models and to identify errors or biases. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research on the application of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) in the context of cybersecurity, with a focus on its benefits and challenges. Specifically, it analyses the most recent techniques and tools for implementing XAI in cybersecurity, while also highlighting several successful use cases. Furthermore, it delves into the ethical and regulatory considerations associated with XAI in cybersecurity and provides recommendations for future research in this area. The ultimate objective of this review article is to furnish cybersecurity professionals with a detailed understanding of the potential of XAI to enhance the efficacy of AI-based tools in cybersecurity, underscoring the significance of transparency and interpretability in assuring the security and dependability of AI systems.
