Security mechanisms such as cryptographic algorithms play an important role in Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi). However, these algorithms consume a lot of memory and power. In this paper, we proposed an improved encryption algorithm that reduces the heavy consumption of power and storage to effectively protect public Wi-Fi networks. The proposed encryption algorithm was based on a hash-based message authentication algorithm. The proposed cryptographic algorithm was evaluated against the current cryptographic algorithm. We used the Network Simulation 2 (NS-2) tool to evaluate different settings for each algorithm, such as data block size, different platforms, different and decryption speeds.
