The Playbook

Cynthia M. Lum, Christopher S. Koper · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2017

This chapter considers playbooks as a decision-making tool in which research knowledge might be infused. It highlights a free resource for the Matrix Demonstration Project called the Evidence-Based Policing Playbook (Playbook), which contains evidence-based and operational ideas for law enforcement officers to use and adapt during their everyday patrol to reduce, prevent, and deter crime. It also points out how the Playbook encourages officers and agencies to determine what are the crime problems and conditions that are relevant to their jurisdictions and to add other plays that may be relevant or useful. The chapter walks through some plays in the Playbook, using them as an example of how research knowledge can be translated into practical applications. It covers plays that are organized into two types: crime prevention plays and trust and confidence plays.
