Mammography is the best available procedure for the non invasive detection of signs of breast cancer by way of identifying masses, calcifications, bilateral asymmetry and architectural distortion. The work is divided into four parts, they are pre-processing, detection of lesions (or masses), architectural distortion and micro calcifications in mammograms. An attempt has also been made for segmenting the diseased regions by applying Markov random fields along with watershed transform, together with mathematical morphological operators, The proposed algorithm is experimented with 10 mammogram image sets. The results are evaluated with ground truth values
