SQL vs NoSQL Databases for the Microservices: A Comparative Survey

Microservices is a software architecture technique that divides large and intricate applications into smaller, more manageable units. This method facilitates faster development, scalability, and enhanced fault tolerance as microservices can be developed, deployed, and scaled independently. Nevertheless, data management can be a significant challenge when using microservices. This survey explores the comparison between SQL and NoSQL databases in the context of microservices architecture. It investigates the advantages and challenges associated with each type of database and their suitability for supporting microservices-based applications. The survey analyzes factors such as data consistency, scalability, performance, and query capabilities. It highlights the strengths and weaknesses of SQL and NoSQL databases, considering their impact on maintaining data integrity and supporting distributed systems. By providing an overview of the characteristics and trade-offs of both database types, this survey aims to assist decision-making when choosing a suitable database solution for microservices-based applications.
