Water law and municipal water in an era of technological development
Alberto Quintavalla · Edward Elgar Publishing eBooks · 2023
Digitalization is not only disrupting existing business models but also impacting the management of natural resources, including water. Since technological developments in the water sector materialize more slowly at the international, regional and national levels, municipal water law has become the preferred forum for innovation. This development is due to the ongoing promotion of smart sustainable cities. This chapter concerns the early development of smart cities and smart urban water management, and it includes an analysis of the most common smart water technologies that are used in urban areas. Furthermore, it discusses the hitherto unaddressed challenges that smart cities face, focusing on salient issues such as security and privacy, water equity, and the financing of water-related investment.
